Who was Nico Ammerlaan?

When my dad's partner passed away and the
 apartment was cleaned out,
my sister took a box full of family pictures.
Last weekend I started sorting things
out and found a beautiful picture of a young man.

My paternal grandmother wrote on it:
"My oldest brother Nico, 28 years old, 1924.
Died at the age of 30, 1926".

(why oh why didn't my grandmother write on the backside of the picture?)

This is really bizarre, because I have never heard
of him before. I cannot remember my dad
mentioning his name once. I am so curious
now who he was and why he died so young.

Dancing

Last summer in July my daughter performed with her dance school in the "Theatre de la ville de Luxembourg" and we received the photos this week.
Some of them are really cool.

^ She loves hiphop and these two photos are her favorites.

She also dances jazz and ballet, but she likes hiphop more.
Dancing means the world to her and her mama is so thankful for this passion in her life.

Our trip to China

The last week of July until mid August we flew
to China to visit our second son, who went there
in April for an internship in Beijing. We stayed in
Beijing for 6 days, where he guided us around,
then took the train to Xi'an to see the terracotta
warriors, then travelled to Shanghai, before
coming back to Beijing and take our flight home.
It was an adventure, to say the least!

It was very, very hot and very, very crowded ;).
And since they spoke only Chinese
(almost no English), we used signs and
 gestures to make ourselves understood.
Dinner was a challenge because we ate
in small, cheap cafés (like 10€ for the six of us),
and most of the time there were no pictures
on the menu list and only Chinese signs.
But we ate well most of the time and nobody
 had stomach problems.

Shanghai is much more modern than Beijing,
 but we liked Beijing better.

^ The Chinese wall. I would love to say that I
climbed up that hill, but I didn't...
It was just too hot and climbing stairs isn't
my favorite thing. The others did though.

^ The terracotta army, one of the most amazing
things I have ever seen. Thousands of soldiers.

^ Shanghai skyline.

^ The watertown Zhouzhuang was a highlight
and very quiet on Monday morning.

^ We tried to avoid these (not always successfully).

One thing we didn't like was the attention
we had as a "patchwork family".
It was really bad, especially for our son
 who was photographed all.the.time.
Sometimes they asked if they could take a picture
(and I said "no, but thank you for asking"),
but most of the time they did it secretly.
We were so surprised because Beijing
and Shanghai are huge cities, they must
 have seen dark-skinned people somewhere,
if not in real life, then at least on the internet??!!

Like I said, it was an adventure, and we loved it.
(Another three weeks before school starts 😊).

Building sand castles

We spent a week in the Netherlands in a
house just behind the dunes...

I rode a bike again for the first time in 10
(perhaps 15) years (and it felt really good) ...

... and the kids (young and old) built a sand
castle almost every day.

One more week till school starts.

The Lion King, Madurodam and the beach

Last weekend we went to the musical The Lion King
(so amazing!) in the Netherlands in Scheveningen beach. We wanted to meet up with my sister and her family on Saturday, but the roads were extremely slippery in
her part of the country and they couldn't make it
 (it's a 1,5-hour drive).

Instead we went to Madurodam, a tourist attraction,
showing lots of Dutch highlights in miniature.
Last time I went there, my husband and I were
not even married yet, which is almost 30 years ago.
It was fun to take the kids there.

On Sunday the weather was unexpectedly beautiful
and instead of driving back immediately,
we had a short stop at the beach.

I miss the beach and the water in Holland so much.

Poldark

I love Poldark!!!
I watch one or two episodes every
night when the kids are in bed.

I wish I would have known about the books
when we spent two weeks in Cornwall in 2006.

We loved it there (although it was
quite a ride from Luxembourg).

And look at my children 10 years ago!
The boys were 15^

and 13^

Our daugther was almost three and our
 youngest son only 15 months.

I would really love to go back one day.

The Eifel

We just returned from a lovely trip to the Eifel in Germany.
We had been invited by my oldest son's parents-in-law,
who live close to the Eifel National Park.
It's a 2.5 hours' drive and instead of going there only
for the weekend, we decided to stay the whole week.
We had a really great weekend with them!

The rest of the week we did some nice trips.
We loved the small city of Monschau with its
 typical German houses.

We bought some homemade salad dressing
with German mustard and honey to enjoy at home.

And in Heimbach we found our favorite shop.

It is full of homemade liqueur and vinegar.

We brought home four small bottles with different
flavors of vinegar. The vinegar's acidity is only
3% and it tastes very fruity.
It can be used for salads, of course, but you can also
drink it with water like lemonade or put some
 drops in your champagne.

The kids liked the visit to the glass blowing factory.

Beautiful houses everywhere.

I thought that pillow on the bench at the bus
 stop was very funny.

Cake and ice cream everyday.

But what they loved most was seeing their brothers.
They love them so much, and now that they
bring girlfriends, they love them even more!

The library

Last Saturday we went to the library.

I haven't been in a library since I left the
Netherlands, more than 30 years ago.

When I was young, I went to the library a couple
of times a week. I loved it!
But then I came to Luxembourg and the chance
of finding books in Dutch or English was close to
zero, so I started buying books in the Netherlands
when we visited my family.

After a couple of years I became fluent in
German (my husband and I speak German
together, even after all these years), I discovered
Amazon.de and started reading books in German.

The kids have a school library and they bring
home a couple of books every now and then,
but they just don't like to read (although my
daughter loves audiobooks and most of the
books in my Audible library are hers).

A couple of months ago I bought this book
for my daughter, who likes to draw,
 about drawing Manga.

We saw a Manga movie or two, before she
discovered comic Manga books.

From that moment on she started downloading
them on my Kindle. She just couldn't stop reading.
Every day she asked me if she could do some
chores for me and have another book.
I was so happy that she had finally found
something she liked to read that I didn't mind.
These books are not very expensive (4€),
but if you buy five, you have spend 20€, and
 they are very fast reads.

So, that's where the library comes in!
We started going to the Cité Bibliothèque in
Luxembourg-city on Saturday mornings
and I am thrilled. We took three library cards,
which means we can take 12 books,
6 audiobooks and 6 movies every time.
I have so missed this all these years!

PS: Did you know these books are read from
right to left? You start on the last page and read
the bubbles also from the right corner of the
 page to the left corner.
